About the Product

Valentine opens rich scarlet red double flowers that look like miniature roses, a vivid color for a shade garden in spring. It is one of the later-flowering primroses in its group, carrying color into late spring when earlier kinds are fading.

The foliage is dense and deeply crinkled, and the plant stays compact at 5 to 8 inches. It is fully hardy in the ground, and it is also worth potting a few for windowsills and mixed spring containers where you can see the blooms up close.

What it looks like

Fully double, rose-like flowers about 1.5 inches wide in a rich, saturated scarlet red, with tightly layered petals and no contrasting eye. The blooms cluster in the center of the plant and sit just above the leaves. Foliage is dense, bright green and strongly crinkled (rugose), with oblong leaves forming a low rosette. The plant is a compact mound 5 to 8 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide. At peak it looks like a nosegay of small red roses on a bed of textured green leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Primroses want cool shade and steady moisture, so give them a spot away from the lavender field, such as a woodland edge, a shaded front walk or the north side of the house.

Care

Give it part to full shade and humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist but never waterlogged, especially while it is blooming. Hardy in zones 4-8; pull off faded flowers to keep the plant tidy and divide crowded clumps after bloom every few years.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

When to plant

Early spring or early fall in cool weather.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil surface; don't bury the rosette.

Spacing

About 8–12 in apart.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Among the earliest perennials: rosettes often stay green over winter and bloom in early spring. Leaves may shrink or partly disappear in summer heat, then return in fall.
