About the Product

Berry Timeless is a coral bells grown for its flowers as much as its leaves. It blooms continuously from early summer to frost, sending up tight wands of light pink flowers that age to a deeper rose red.

The spent flowers dry in place instead of dropping, so each wand shows two tones at once. Its low, green evergreen mound handles heat and humidity well, and hummingbirds and bees visit the flowers all season.

What it looks like

Tight, narrow wands of tiny bell-shaped flowers, light pink when fresh and aging to deeper rose red, held on thin, upright stems 18 to 20 inches tall; older flowers dry in place, giving each wand a two-tone pink and rose look. Leaves are rounded, lobed and medium green with a soft texture. The foliage forms a low, neat mound 8 to 10 inches tall and about 20 inches wide. At peak bloom dozens of pink and rose wands stand above the compact green mound.

Growing it with lavender

Berry Timeless can take sun but prefers richer, more evenly moist soil than lavender, so set it at the shady end of the border or in a nearby container rather than in the lavender bed itself.

Care

Grow in full sun to full shade (afternoon shade is best in hot areas) in rich, well-drained soil with regular moisture. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Cut back spent flower stems whenever you like, and tidy worn leaves in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
