About the Product

Big Sky is a large-scale salvia, growing into a clump about 2.5 feet tall and wide with tall stems of violet-blue flowers rising from a thick rosette of big green leaves. It starts blooming a little later than most perennial salvias, which helps stretch the season.

Plenty of side branching keeps new spikes coming, so the display lasts. It grows fast and fills space quickly, making it a good choice for larger borders and mass plantings in full sun.

What it looks like

Tall, branched flower stems 12 to 18 inches long lined with small, hooded two-lipped florets in violet-blue, set in purplish calyxes; many secondary side spikes branch off the main stems. The flowering stems rise well above a dense basal rosette. Leaves are large, broad, oval to lance-shaped, 4 to 6 inches long, mid-green and crinkled. The plant is a full, rounded clump 28 to 32 inches tall and wide. At peak it looks like a big fountain of violet-blue spires over a thick carpet of leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Salvia wants the same full sun and lean, well-drained soil as lavender, and its upright spikes echo lavender's form while filling the gap before and after the main lavender bloom.

Care

Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil; it is drought tolerant once established and grows quickly. Hardy in zones 3-8; after the first bloom, cut spent spikes down to the leafy base to encourage side branches and more flowers.

How to grow Big Sky

Perennial Salvia / Russian Sage · Salvia

Give full sun and well-drained soil. Perennial salvias (S. nemorosa, S. × sylvestris) rebloom when cut back; Russian sage (S. yangii) is a woody, late-waking subshrub pruned only in spring.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring is best; early fall works if 6 weeks remain before freeze.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring is best; early fall works if 6 weeks remain before freeze.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil, never buried.

Spacing

Perennial salvias 18–24"; Russian sage about 3 ft.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or loamy · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: In heavy clay, raise the bed or add grit. Skip rich compost; lean soil gives sturdier stems. Wet winter soil is the main killer.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light shade, with fewer flowers).

6+ hours of sun keeps plants compact. Russian sage especially flops in shade.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Salvia nemorosa types show basal leaves in early spring. Russian sage is late: woody stems look dead until mid- to late spring, when small gray-green buds break. Wait before cutting or removing it.
