Black Joker is a compact Siberian iris with small, detailed flowers in striking colors: deep wine-purple falls edged in buttery yellow under light blue upright petals. Each bloom is about 2½ to 3 inches across.
The plant stays about 20 inches tall and 1½ to 2 feet wide, a good size for the front of a border or near a water feature. It blooms in early summer and is resistant to deer and rabbits. The slender, grassy foliage looks tidy all season.
What it looks like
Small flowers about 2½ to 3 inches across with deep wine-purple falls edged in thin buttery-yellow margins and light blue upright standards. Flowers are held on slender, upright stems just above narrow, grass-like green leaves. The plant forms a compact, upright clump about 20 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. Many flowers open at once on the clump. At peak the dark wine and pale blue blooms create a jewel-like contrast above the fine foliage.
Growing it with lavender
Siberian iris prefers steadier moisture than lavender, so it fits best in a moister border or rain garden nearby, where its early-summer blooms can open just before the lavender begins.
Care
Grow in full sun to part shade in average to rich soil and keep it well watered through the season, especially in spring and early summer. Hardy in zones 3-9. Cut back the foliage in late fall or early spring, and divide crowded clumps in late summer; Siberian iris is not bothered by black walnut.
