Blue Bayou is a compact hummingbird mint with deep indigo blue flower spikes, a color that is still uncommon in this group. It blooms from midsummer into early fall in the north, giving pollinators a steady source of nectar late in the season.
At only 16 to 18 inches tall, it fits the front or middle of a border, rock gardens and dry-soil containers. The leaves have a pleasant minty-licorice scent when brushed. It is easy to grow in sunny, well-drained spots and is a favorite of hummingbirds, butterflies and bees while deer tend to leave it alone.
What it looks like
Upright spikes 3 to 5 inches long densely set with small tubular flowers in deep indigo blue to blue-violet, held in dusky purple-blue calyxes. Spikes stand at the tips of many stems across the top of the plant. Leaves are medium green, oval to lance-shaped with toothed edges, about 1.5 to 2 inches long. The plant is compact and bushy, 16 to 18 inches tall and 14 to 18 inches wide. At peak bloom the whole top of the mound is a dense crown of indigo spikes.
Growing it with lavender
Blue Bayou loves the same hot sun and lean, well-drained soil as lavender, and its deep indigo spikes echo lavender's form while carrying blue color on into late summer and early fall after lavender's main flush.
Care
Give it full sun and loose, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells once established and dislikes soggy winter soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9. Leave the stems standing over winter and cut back in spring once new growth appears, since this helps the crowns survive cold, wet weather.
