Blue Jean Baby is a shorter, bushy Russian sage that fits more easily into home gardens, reaching about 28 to 34 inches. It is one of the earliest Russian sages to flower, opening violet-blue blooms in midsummer.
The flowers sit in smoky purple calyxes that keep their color into fall, so the plant looks in bloom for a long time. Its stems hold upright rather than flopping. It is vigorous, drought tolerant, deer resistant and very cold hardy.
What it looks like
Dense, branching spires are lined with tiny, tubular violet-blue flowers set in smoky purple calyxes, on sturdy grayish stems. The leaves are small, narrow to oval, finely toothed and gray-green with a sage-like scent. The plant forms a bushy, upright subshrub about 28 to 34 inches tall and 36 inches wide. At peak bloom the whole plant is covered with blue-violet spires tinted smoky purple at their bases.
Growing it with lavender
Russian sage and lavender want the same hot sun and lean, sharp-draining soil, and its blue-violet spires take over in late summer after the main lavender bloom, carrying the silvery, fragrant look into fall.
Care
Plant in full sun in lean to average, well-drained soil; it thrives in heat and drought and dislikes wet feet. Hardy in zones 4-9. Leave the stems standing over winter, then in spring, once new buds show, cut back to just above the lowest set of new growth; it is slow to leaf out, so be patient.
