About the Product

Blue Steel is a big bluestem selected for steel-blue foliage brushed with purple, a cool change from the red-toned types. The color deepens as the season goes on and carries the plant well into fall.

It forms a dense, upright clump about 4½ feet tall, topped in late summer by blue-purple flower spikes. This tough native prairie grass handles clay, drought and poor soil, stands up through winter, and works well in meadows, screens and modern plantings.

What it looks like

Narrow, upright blades about ¼ to ½ inch wide are steel blue with purple tints that intensify through late summer and fall. The plant forms a dense, stiffly vertical clump about 54 inches tall and 30 inches wide. In late summer slender stems rise just above the leaves with three-part, forked flower heads shaped like a turkey foot, in purple and blue tones. In fall the whole clump takes on deeper purple and bronze shades and holds its upright form.

Growing it with lavender

It thrives in the same full sun and lean soil as lavender, and its tall blue-purple blades make a strong vertical backdrop behind mounded lavender plantings.

Care

Plant in full sun in almost any soil, including clay; it is drought tolerant once established but adapts to moist soil too. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Leave it standing for winter interest and cut it back to a few inches in early spring.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Late spring once soil is warm; it's a warm-season grass that grows strongest in heat.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 72-cell plugs directly into well-weeded, warm soil in late spring, or pot up into 4-inch pots for a few weeks first. Keep moist until new blades appear.

When to plant

Late spring once soil is warm; it's a warm-season grass that grows strongest in heat.

How deep

Plant with the top of the plug level with the soil surface; don't bury the growing point.

Spacing

2–3 feet apart; clumps grow 4–6 feet tall in bloom (shorter selections exist).

Soil

Adaptable: sandy, loamy or clay · pH 5.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Skip the compost and fertilizer. Rich soil makes it grow too tall and flop; lean soil keeps it upright.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates very light part shade).

Any real shade leads to weak, leaning stems and less of the blue and red color.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

A warm-season grass, it stays brown well into late spring and often shows new green shoots only in May or June. Don't give up on it while cool-season grasses are already green.
