About the Product

Blue Whiskers is a vigorous blue fescue with longer leaves and brighter silver-blue color than the classic types. It forms a full, rounded tuft about a foot tall that keeps its color through the year.

In early summer, slender stems about 18 to 22 inches tall carry yellow-green flower heads that ripen to tan. It loves heat, poor soil and dry conditions, making it a natural edging, container and rock garden plant.

What it looks like

Very fine, needle-like leaves are a bright silvery blue and form a dense, rounded, porcupine-like tuft about 10 to 12 inches tall and 24 to 28 inches wide. In early summer, thin upright stems rise evenly around the tuft to 18 to 22 inches, topped with narrow, yellow-green flower heads that ripen to straw tan. The foliage has a soft, fine texture and a silvery sheen. At peak the plant is an icy blue ball with a halo of pale stems above it.

Growing it with lavender

Blue Whiskers loves the same full sun and poor, dry soil as lavender, and its silvery blue tufts make a cool, fine-textured edging in front of lavender.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in lean, very well-drained soil; it dislikes wet or rich soil. Hardy in zones 4 to 8. Comb out dead leaves and trim flower stems after they brown; divide every few years to keep it vigorous.

Hardy in zones 4a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Plant 72-cell plugs directly into gritty soil once rooted, or pot into 3-4 in pots. Water lightly; plugs rot if kept soggy.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level; don't bury the base of the clump.

Spacing

8-12 in apart.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly, or average soil · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: It will not tolerate wet, poorly drained soil. In clay, mix in grit and plant on a mound. Skip compost and fertilizer.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade).

Best blue color in full sun; shade makes it greener and floppy.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Evergreen, but winter often leaves brown tips. In early spring, comb out dead blades with your fingers; fresh blue growth appears from the base by mid spring.
