Blueberry Muffin is a strong, dependable blue hosta with large, rounded leaves puckered in unusual, irregular patterns. Light mauve speckles on the leaf stalks add a subtle extra detail.
It forms a medium mound about 14 inches tall and 3 feet wide. Lavender flowers rise just above the foliage in early summer, and late in the season the leaves shift to green. It is a good choice for mass planting, borders and containers.
What it looks like
A medium, mounded clump about 14 inches tall and 36 inches wide of large, rounded blue leaves with a rugose, irregularly puckered surface. Leaf stalks carry light mauve speckles. In early summer, stems about 18 inches tall carry lavender bell flowers just above the leaves. Late in the season the leaves turn green. At peak the plant is a textured blue mound with a soft lavender crown.
Growing it with lavender
Keep it out of the lavender field and plant it in a moist, shaded bed where it can pair with coral bells, ferns and bleeding hearts.
Care
Grows best in part to full shade. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. Watch for slugs in damp springs.
