About the Product

Boogie Woogie is a low, spreading sedum with green leaves edged in cream, giving the whole mat a bright yellow glow. Yellow star flowers join in during early to midsummer.

It forms a solid carpet only 6 to 8 inches tall, ideal for slopes, dry sunny spots, rock gardens and the edges of paths. It is extremely drought tolerant, often keeps its leaves through winter, and rabbits leave it alone.

What it looks like

Small, fleshy, rounded to spoon-shaped leaves about half an inch to 1 inch long, green in the center with wide creamy yellow margins, packed along short, spreading stems. In early summer, flat clusters of small, bright yellow, star-shaped flowers sit just above the leaves. The plant forms a dense, low mat 6 to 8 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide. At peak it looks like a glowing yellow-green carpet dotted with yellow stars.

Growing it with lavender

This low sedum thrives in the same hot, sunny, well-drained ground as lavender, making a tidy succulent carpet along the front edge of a lavender bed or between stepping stones.

Care

Plant in full sun in average to poor, well-drained soil; it is very drought tolerant and does not like wet feet. Hardy in zones 3-9; trim off faded flower stems after bloom if you want a neater mat, and divide or replant pieces anywhere you want it to fill in.

Spring through early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and tender. Pot into 4-inch pots and grow on 3–5 weeks in bright light, or plant out after frost. Keep evenly moist, harden off a week, and set the plug top level with the soil.

When to plant

Spring through early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil surface.

Spacing

10–12 inches; mats spread over time.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or rocky · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Add grit or pea gravel to clay. Don't add rich compost; lean soil keeps mats tight.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

Shade makes them stretch and lose leaf color.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Many keep evergreen or semi-evergreen leaves through winter; others die back to small rosettes and regrow in early spring. Flowers in summer.
