About the Product

Boom Chocolatta pairs dark, chocolate-bronze leaves with a crown of blue-purple flowers starting in early summer. The deep foliage color gives it interest all season, and it makes a strong contrast next to green or chartreuse plants.

This upright meadow cranesbill is vigorous and well shaped, reaching about two feet tall and wider. Bees visit steadily, and deer and rabbits tend to ignore it.

What it looks like

Saucer-shaped, five-petaled flowers about 1½ inches across in blue-purple with fine darker veins and a paler center, carried in clusters that cover the top of the plant. Leaves are deeply lobed and cut, palm-like, 4 to 6 inches across, in rich dark chocolate-bronze with a slight purple sheen. The plant is an upright, bushy clump 24 to 26 inches tall and 28 to 30 inches wide. At peak bloom in early summer the dark foliage mound is topped with a layer of blue-purple saucers.

Growing it with lavender

The blue-purple flowers and dark bronze leaves blend with lavender's color while adding a heavier leaf texture, in a sunny spot with decent drainage.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil with regular moisture. Hardy in zones 4 to 8. Cut the plant back after its main flush to tidy the foliage and encourage fresh leaves and a few more flowers.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots and grow on until rooted out, or plant straight into prepared soil in spring once frost danger passes. Keep moist for the first few weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level, same depth as in the plug.

Spacing

18–24 inches apart; trailing hybrids can spread 2–3 feet.

Soil

Average, loamy soil · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into sandy or heavy clay soil. Avoid soggy spots; crowns rot in wet winter soil.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade).

In hot regions give afternoon shade. Meadow cranesbill (G. pratense) types prefer full sun; some hybrids bloom all summer.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

New leaves emerge from the crown in mid-spring. Some long-blooming hybrids are late to start and may look like bare crowns until late April or May.
