Brilliance autumn fern puts on a color show from spring through fall. New fronds unfurl a glowing coppery orange, then mature to a glossy dark green, so the plant often shows both colors at once.
In fall, bright red spore dots form on the undersides of the fronds, and in milder areas or with some protection the foliage stays evergreen. It is deer and rabbit resistant and fits beautifully in woodland beds, Japanese-style gardens and shady containers.
What it looks like
Upright, triangular fronds about 18 to 24 inches long are divided into many narrow, pointed leaflets with a glossy finish. New fronds emerge a bright coppery orange to salmon, then turn shiny dark green as they mature. In fall, rows of small red dots line the undersides of the leaflets. The plant forms an upright to gently arching clump about 24 inches tall and wide. In late spring the clump is a mix of glowing orange new growth over deep green older fronds.
Growing it with lavender
Autumn fern needs moist shade, so place it in a shaded woodland or Japanese-style bed rather than among sun-loving lavender.
Care
Plant in part to full shade in rich, humus-filled soil that stays evenly moist but drains well. Hardy in zones 5 to 9; in colder zones mulch in late fall. Trim off damaged fronds in early spring.
