Capture the Flag is a large-leaved foamy bells with deeply lobed chartreuse leaves and dramatic burgundy red centers, a strong color contrast for the shade garden. New leaves appear early in spring, and the foliage stays attractive through fall.
In late spring, clouds of white flowers rise on pale stems above the leaves. The plant grows 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide and is semi-evergreen in mild winters. Use it for edging, containers and brightening shady spots.
What it looks like
A low clump 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide of large, deeply lobed, pointed leaves in bright chartreuse with a bold burgundy red blotch at the center that follows the main veins. In late spring, pale stems 20 to 22 inches tall hold frothy clouds of tiny white star-shaped flowers. At peak the plant is a vivid yellow-green and red clump with a white froth above.
Growing it with lavender
This is a shade plant, so place it in a shaded bed away from the lavender, where its chartreuse and red leaves can brighten ferns and hostas.
Care
Best in part to full shade. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil kept evenly moist; avoid wet winter sites. Hardy in zones 4-9; clean up old leaves in early spring.
