About the Product

Caramel is a vigorous, reliable coral bells known for warm leaf color that shifts from soft apricot to deeper amber with the light and the season. The leaves are slightly fuzzy, and when they catch the wind they show purple-red backs that add depth to the mound.

The plant stays compact, about a foot tall and 12 to 20 inches wide, which makes it easy to tuck into container combos or line along a path. Cream flowers rise a little above the foliage in midsummer. It has earned recognition from several garden programs for dependable performance, and its villosa background gives it good heat tolerance.

What it looks like

A compact, rounded mound about 12 inches tall and 12 to 20 inches wide of broad, lobed leaves with a soft, fuzzy surface. Leaf color ranges from pale apricot on new growth to honey amber on mature leaves, with purple-red undersides visible where leaves overlap or turn. In midsummer, slim stems about 14 inches tall carry loose clusters of tiny cream bell flowers held just above the leaves. At peak the plant reads as a warm caramel-orange dome with a light cream haze on top.

Growing it with lavender

Its warm amber leaves contrast well with the silvery gray of lavender foliage at a lightly shaded bed edge, though it needs more even moisture than lavender.

Care

Takes full sun to full shade, with the brightest color in morning sun and afternoon shade. Give it average to fertile, well-drained soil and regular watering; winter wet causes rot. Hardy in zones 4-9; remove old flower stems and ragged leaves in spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
