Catch a Wave is a mangave with wild, wavy leaves that curl upward at the edges to show off their marginal teeth. It carries more agave heritage than most mangaves, and it shows in its thick, sculptural foliage.
The silvery blue-green leaves are lightly dotted with dark spots, and the upright habit looks as good from the side as from above. It makes an eye-catching specimen for containers and sunny rock gardens.
What it looks like
Very thick, silvery blue-green leaves about 1½ to 2 inches wide are sparingly marked with small dark purple spots. The leaf margins curl upward and twist into waves, showing off rows of small teeth, and each leaf ends in a spine. The leaves form an upright, open rosette 8 to 10 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide. The overall look is a silvery, wave-edged star with a sculptural, twisting texture.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 9 to 11.
