About the Product

Catesby's pitcher plant is a natural hybrid of the purple and yellow pitcher plants, and it shows traits of both. Its broad, sturdy pitchers end in wide, flared hoods marked with red veins and hints of copper on the back, and they stay colorful all season.

In early spring, before the pitchers grow, it sends up nodding flowers that open deep burgundy red and slowly turn chartreuse. It is a hardy, compact carnivorous plant for bog gardens, wet containers and pond edges in full sun.

What it looks like

Broad, sturdy, trumpet-shaped pitchers 8 to 10 inches tall, green to yellow-green at the base, widening to a large, flared, wavy hood covered in a network of red veins with coppery tones on the back. Pitchers lean slightly outward in a rosette-like clump. In spring, nodding flowers about 2 inches across open deep burgundy red and age to chartreuse, each on a single stem above the pitchers. There are no ordinary leaves; the pitchers are the foliage. The clump is 8 to 10 inches tall and wide.

Growing it with lavender

Pitcher plants need a constantly wet, acidic bog, the opposite of lavender's dry, lean ground, so give them their own bog garden, a lined container or the edge of a pond in full sun.

Care

Grow in full sun in a constantly wet, low-nutrient mix of peat moss and sand, such as a lined bog bed or a container sitting in a tray of water. Use rainwater or distilled water and never fertilize or use regular potting soil. Hardy in zones 5-9; trim away old, browned pitchers in early spring.

Hardy in zones 5a–9b

Pot up in spring as growth starts; bog-garden plantings in spring.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot each plug in a peat/sand or peat/perlite mix in a plastic pot with drainage holes. Stand in a tray of rain or distilled water in full sun. Small plugs make small pitchers; size builds over several seasons.

When to plant

Pot up in spring as growth starts; bog-garden plantings in spring.

How deep

Set the rhizome horizontally at or just below the surface, with growing points just above the soil.

Spacing

One per 6–8 in pot to start; in a bog, about 12 in apart.

Soil

Peat moss mixed about half and half with coarse sand or perlite; no potting soil or compost · pH 4.0–6.0

Fix-it tip: Use only sphagnum peat with clean sand or perlite. No fertilizer, lime, compost or regular potting mix; minerals and nutrients burn the roots.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates very bright light; grow lights with reflectors).

Too little sun means weak, floppy, poorly colored pitchers.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

In spring, flowers usually appear first, before new pitchers. The new pitchers follow in late spring. Last year's pitchers turning brown over winter is normal dormancy.
