Cherry Truffles is all about ruffles and red. New leaves come in bright cherry red and so heavily frilled that the mound looks crinkled, then settle into a deep mahogany red as summer goes on, so the plant holds strong color from spring through fall.
It forms a low, wide mound only 8 to 10 inches tall but up to 30 inches across, making it a good groundcover-style edging plant or a spiller for large containers. From early to midsummer, dark burgundy stems carry light pink flowers in darker rose cups.
What it looks like
A low, spreading mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 26 to 30 inches wide composed of tightly ruffled, crinkled leaves about the size of a palm. New leaves are bright cherry red; older leaves deepen to glossy mahogany red, with the frilled edges catching light. Dark burgundy flower stems rise 18 to 22 inches in early to midsummer, carrying small light pink bells set in dark rose calyces. At peak the planting looks like a wide, rumpled red carpet topped by a loose pink haze.
Growing it with lavender
The ruffled red mounds work at the lightly shaded end of a lavender bed, echoing purple tones, as long as they get a bit more water than the lavender.
Care
Grows in full sun to full shade, with best color in part sun. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly in dry spells; hardy in zones 4-9. Clip spent flower stems and tidy old foliage in early spring.
