About the Product

Creamy Calico is a threadleaf coreopsis with soft yellow flowers marked by a broad, crisp maroon eye. The two colors stay cleanly separated, with no streaking into the petals, for a tidy bicolor look.

It forms a fine-textured mound 16 to 18 inches tall and 2 feet or more wide, with foliage that resists mildew. Blooms last for weeks from early summer through late summer, and the plant is easy, drought tolerant and suited to borders and containers.

What it looks like

A rounded, fine-textured mound about 16 to 18 inches tall and 24 to 28 inches wide. Foliage is very fine and threadlike, medium green, with an airy, feathery texture. Flat daisy-like flowers about 1.5 inches across have broad, flat soft butter-yellow petals with a wide, sharply defined deep maroon ring at the base around a small dark center. At peak bloom the mound is covered with bicolor flowers held just above the fine foliage.

Growing it with lavender

It thrives in the same sunny, lean, well-drained soil as lavender, and its soft yellow and maroon flowers brighten a lavender bed in midsummer.

Care

Plant in full sun in average to lean, well-drained soil; it is drought tolerant once established and dislikes wet winter soil. Hardy in zones 5-9. Shear the plant back by about a third after the first big flush to tidy it and encourage more flowers.

Hardy in zones 5a–9b

Spring after hard frosts, or early fall at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot up or plant plugs once frost has passed. Keep soil lightly moist for the first few weeks while roots grow out; full sun from the start once hardened off. Pinching tips once makes a fuller plant.

When to plant

Spring after hard frosts, or early fall at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes.

How deep

Set the crown even with the soil surface, with the fine roots spread out below. Don't bury the crown or mound mulch against it.

Spacing

About 18–24 in apart; plants spread slowly by short rhizomes.

Soil

Sandy, rocky or average loam; tolerates clay if it drains · pH 5.5–8.0

Fix-it tip: Don't enrich it. In heavy clay, loosen the bed and mix in grit or plant on a slight mound so the crown never sits wet in winter.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part sun (a few hours of shade)).

More shade means fewer flowers and floppier stems.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

A late riser: fine, needle-like shoots usually appear mid-to-late spring, often after many other perennials. Don't dig it up in April thinking it's dead; scratch the crown and look for green buds.
