Plant in part to full shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Keep it watered; drought and afternoon sun are what hurt these ferns most.

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

Set the crown level with the soil; don't bury the center where new fronds (fiddleheads) form.

Fix-it tip: Add compost or leaf mold and mulch with shredded leaves. Lady ferns (A. filix-femina) want more moisture than Japanese painted ferns (A. niponicum).

Japanese painted ferns color best with gentle morning light. Most lady ferns need shade; afternoon sun causes scorch and wilting.

Fronds unfurl in mid- to late spring, after many perennials; painted ferns can be especially late. Look for small fiddleheads at the crown before you worry.

Browning, crispy fronds mean too dry or too sunny. Lady ferns may go dormant early in dry summers.
