Crystal Blue stands apart from most perennial salvias with its light sky-blue flowers, a cool, clear shade instead of the usual deep purple. It blooms early in the season, from late spring into early summer.
The dense, rounded clump of crinkled, gray-green leaves looks tidy all season. Shear it after the first flush for more flowers. It is drought tolerant once established, a magnet for bees and butterflies, and not eaten by deer or rabbits.
What it looks like
Upright flower spikes 5 to 7 inches long densely set with small two-lipped florets in light sky blue with pale calyxes. Many spikes rise evenly over the plant. Leaves are lance-shaped, 2 to 3 inches long, gray-green, aromatic and crinkled. The plant forms a dense, rounded clump 18 to 20 inches tall and 24 to 26 inches wide. At peak it is a soft dome of pale blue spires over gray-green foliage.
Growing it with lavender
Salvia wants the same full sun and lean, well-drained soil as lavender, and its upright spikes echo lavender's form while filling the gap before and after the main lavender bloom.
Care
Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil; it is drought tolerant once established. Hardy in zones 3-8; shear the plant back by about a third after the first flush fades to encourage fresh growth and another round of flowers.
