Curtain Call Pink brings fresh color to the garden just as most perennials are fading, with bright rose pink flowers from late summer into fall. Each bloom has a double row of petals for a fuller look than single types.
It stays short and compact at 14 to 18 inches, so it works well in containers on its own or mixed with other perennials, as well as at the front of a border. It spreads slowly by rhizomes and pairs nicely with coneflowers, ornamental grasses and sedum. Deer and rabbits avoid it.
What it looks like
Cup-shaped flowers 2 to 2.5 inches across with a double row of rounded petals in bright rose pink, around a green button center ringed with golden yellow stamens. Flowers sit on short, wiry stems just above the foliage. Leaves are medium green, deeply lobed and three-parted, forming a small, low mound. The plant is compact, 14 to 18 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide. At peak bloom it is crowned with bright pink blossoms.
Growing it with lavender
Japanese anemone wants richer, more evenly moist soil and some afternoon shade, so plant it away from lavender in a partly shaded border or woodland edge, where it will bloom long after lavender is done.
Care
Plant in full sun to part shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist but drains well; afternoon shade helps in hot summers. Hardy in USDA zones 4-8. Mulch the first winter, leave foliage standing until spring, and be patient, as plants can take a season to settle in.
