About the Product

Dancing Queen is a yellow hosta that comes up bright yellow and stays yellow all season, instead of fading to chartreuse like many gold types. Its large leaves have a prominent pie-crust edge that adds a playful ripple.

The clump grows about 18 inches tall and 30 inches wide. In mid to late summer the leaves soften to a lighter yellow and pale lavender flowers rise above. It was named Hosta of the Year in 2020 and works well as a specimen or container plant.

What it looks like

A mounded clump about 18 inches tall and 30 inches wide of large, heart-shaped leaves in bright yellow, each with a crimped, pie-crust edge. By mid to late summer the yellow softens slightly. Stems about 28 inches tall carry pale lavender bell flowers in mid to late summer. At peak the plant is a sunny yellow mound with ruffled edges and soft lavender spires above.

Growing it with lavender

Hostas want shade and steady moisture, so grow this one in a shaded bed away from the lavender, alongside ferns, astilbe or coral bells.

Care

Grows best in part to full shade. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. Watch for slugs in damp springs.

How to grow Dancing Queen

Hosta · Hosta

Hostas want shade to part shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil. Blue and big-leaved types (like H. sieboldiana) need the most shade; many gold and fragrant types tolerate more sun.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 20-cell plugs straight into the garden or a 1-gallon pot; pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots to bulk up first. Keep in shade and evenly moist. Plugs take 3–5 years to show mature leaf size.

When to plant

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

How deep

Set the crown (where roots meet shoots) even with the soil surface. Plants from pots go at the same depth they grew.

Spacing

By mature size: minis 6–12 inches; medium 2 feet; giants 3–5 feet.

Soil

Rich, loamy, high in organic matter · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost, composted manure or leaves. In clay, raise the planting area slightly so crowns don't sit wet over winter.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Blue-leaved types keep their color best in shade. Gold types brighten with some morning sun; most scorch in hot afternoon sun.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Pointed shoots (eyes) push up in mid to late spring, later than many perennials, and unfurl over a couple of weeks. Small plants may stay dormant until May; a firm crown is alive.
