Daring Deception has 5½-inch dusty cream-pink flowers with a large, dark purple eye and green throat. The overlapping petals create an unusually shaped eye zone, and a dark purple pie-crust edge outlines each petal.
It starts blooming in early July and reblooms, with semi-evergreen foliage. The dramatic pattern makes it a conversation piece in any sunny bed.
What it looks like
Flowers about 5½ inches across with overlapping, rounded petals in dusty cream-pink, a large dark plum-purple eye, a dark purple picotee on pie-crust ruffled petal edges, smooth sepals and a green throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 24 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 14 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom cream-pink flowers with dark eyes stand out clearly above the leaves.
Growing it with lavender
Its dark purple eye ties in with lavender's color, and it grows happily beside lavender in full sun and good drainage.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Remove spent scapes promptly to encourage a later round of flowers, and divide crowded clumps every few years.
