About the Product

Desert Diamond is a small, variegated butterfly agave with green leaves boldly edged in bright cream. It forms a remarkably symmetrical, round rosette about a foot tall.

Tiny spines along the edges emerge yellow and age to cinnamon brown, contrasting nicely with the pale margins. The thick, rigid leaves are tough and almost plastic-like, and deer and other pests leave it alone. It is a perfect small specimen for pots and succulent gardens.

What it looks like

Short, broad, thick leaves in green with wide, bright cream margins form a small, very symmetrical, rounded rosette 12 to 15 inches tall and about 18 inches wide. Each leaf edge is lined with small spines that start yellow, turn light brown and age to cinnamon brown, and each leaf ends in a sharp cinnamon-brown tip spine. The leaves are rigid with a smooth, almost plastic-like surface. The rosette looks like a neat green-and-cream star with a warm brown outline.

Growing it with lavender

Like lavender, it wants full sun and sharp drainage, so set it in a container on a gravel patio or among the lavender beds for summer, where its blue-gray rosette echoes lavender's foliage, then move it indoors for winter.

Care

Plant in full sun in gritty, very fast-draining soil and let it dry completely between waterings. Hardy in zones 9 to 10. In the Great Lakes region, grow it in a pot of fast-draining cactus mix and bring it indoors to a bright, cool window before frost; water deeply only when the soil is completely dry.

How to grow Desert Diamond

Agave · Agave potatorum

Agave needs blazing sun, gritty fast-draining soil and a dry winter. Most types you see here are frost-tender, so in Michigan grow them in pots and bring them inside before frost.

Hardy in zones 9a–10b

Pot up plugs any time indoors; set outside after nights stay above about 50°F. In-ground planting only where the species is winter-hardy.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Agave plugs are slow, small rosettes. Pot each into a 4 in pot of gritty cactus mix, water once, then let it dry. Keep in bright light, out of harsh midday sun for a week, then give full sun. Pot up again only when roots fill the pot.

When to plant

Pot up plugs any time indoors; set outside after nights stay above about 50°F. In-ground planting only where the species is winter-hardy.

How deep

Set the rosette's base at the soil line, with lower leaves resting on top. Never bury the base or leaves; a gravel collar helps keep it dry.

Spacing

Give each rosette room to reach its mature width; one plant per pot.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or rocky; never heavy clay · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Use a cactus mix cut with extra grit, pumice or coarse sand. In the ground, plant on a mound or slope and add gravel; standing winter water is what kills agave.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates bright light with a few hours of shade, especially indoors in winter).

Too little light makes rosettes stretch and lose their tight, sculptural shape and blue or banded color.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Agave is evergreen and does not go dormant like perennials. Growth slows in winter indoors and picks up when warm, sunny days return; new leaves unfold slowly from the center.
