Double Pardon Me has the familiar cranberry red of the classic Pardon Me but with far more petals, as many as 18 per bloom instead of the usual six, for a full, double look.
The fragrant flowers open in late afternoon and stay open into the next day, so you can enjoy them in the evening. It blooms in July and reblooms, all on a compact 18-inch plant.
What it looks like
Fully double flowers about 3 inches across with many layered, ruffled tepals in deep cranberry red, forming a rounded, rose-like bloom with a small yellow-green throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 18 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 11 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom the compact clump holds many small double red flowers.
Growing it with lavender
Its deep red double flowers make a rich accent in front of lavender in the same sunny, well-drained soil.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Remove spent scapes promptly to encourage a later round of flowers, and divide crowded clumps every few years.
