About the Product

Dragon Toes is a small agave that forms a dense rosette of powder-blue leaves edged with bold red teeth and tipped with sharp spines. The color contrast is striking up close.

At about 8 to 12 inches tall, it is ideal for containers, rock gardens and succulent displays. It is very drought tolerant and slow growing. Like other agaves, it takes many years to bloom, and the main rosette dies after flowering.

What it looks like

Thick, broad, pointed leaves in a soft powder blue form a dense, compact, symmetrical rosette. Each leaf edge carries evenly spaced, curved reddish teeth, and each tip ends in a sharp reddish-brown spine. Faint imprints of neighboring leaves show on the leaf surfaces. The rosette is 8 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 24 inches wide. The overall look is a chunky, powder-blue star outlined in red.

Growing it with lavender

Like lavender, it wants full sun and sharp drainage, so set it in a container on a gravel patio or among the lavender beds for summer, where its blue-gray rosette echoes lavender's foliage, then move it indoors for winter.

Care

Plant in full sun in sandy or gravelly, very fast-draining soil and let it dry fully between waterings. Hardy in zones 9 to 11. In the Great Lakes region, grow it in a pot of fast-draining cactus mix and bring it indoors to a bright, cool window before frost; water deeply only when the soil is completely dry.

How to grow Dragon Toes

Agave · Agave pygmaea

Agave needs blazing sun, gritty fast-draining soil and a dry winter. Most types you see here are frost-tender, so in Michigan grow them in pots and bring them inside before frost.

Hardy in zones 9a–11b

Pot up plugs any time indoors; set outside after nights stay above about 50°F. In-ground planting only where the species is winter-hardy.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Agave plugs are slow, small rosettes. Pot each into a 4 in pot of gritty cactus mix, water once, then let it dry. Keep in bright light, out of harsh midday sun for a week, then give full sun. Pot up again only when roots fill the pot.

When to plant

Pot up plugs any time indoors; set outside after nights stay above about 50°F. In-ground planting only where the species is winter-hardy.

How deep

Set the rosette's base at the soil line, with lower leaves resting on top. Never bury the base or leaves; a gravel collar helps keep it dry.

Spacing

Give each rosette room to reach its mature width; one plant per pot.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or rocky; never heavy clay · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Use a cactus mix cut with extra grit, pumice or coarse sand. In the ground, plant on a mound or slope and add gravel; standing winter water is what kills agave.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates bright light with a few hours of shade, especially indoors in winter).

Too little light makes rosettes stretch and lose their tight, sculptural shape and blue or banded color.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Agave is evergreen and does not go dormant like perennials. Growth slows in winter indoors and picks up when warm, sunny days return; new leaves unfold slowly from the center.
