About the Product

Electric Plum puts on a two-part color show. Leaves open nearly black, then lighten to a bright, saturated purple crossed with dark veins, so the mound always carries a mix of both shades. It is one of the more vivid purple coral bells available.

In midsummer, dark stems hold dainty flowers in bright fuchsia pink, a stronger flower show than many foliage types. The plant stays low at 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide, fitting neatly into edging, mass plantings and containers.

What it looks like

A low, tidy mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide of rounded, lobed leaves. The youngest leaves are nearly black; mature leaves are vivid plum purple with prominent black veins running from the center. Near-black flower stems reach 16 to 18 inches in midsummer, carrying slim clusters of tiny bright fuchsia pink bells. At peak the planting shows a mix of black and electric purple foliage under a sprinkling of hot pink.

Growing it with lavender

The plum and black foliage deepens the purple of lavender blooms when planted at a bed edge that gets afternoon shade and a little more water.

Care

Handles full sun to full shade; the purple is richest with some afternoon shade. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with regular moisture, and avoid wet winter spots; hardy in zones 4-9. Deadhead the flower stems after bloom and trim old leaves in spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
