About the Product

Eye Spy is a foamy bells grown for flowers as much as foliage. Bubblegum pink blooms appear in spring and keep going for many weeks, a longer show than most.

In spring, large, cut leaves open amber yellow with deep rose centers that vein outward toward the edges. As the weather warms, they mellow to bright chartreuse green with a silvery wash. The plant forms a low mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide and is evergreen in most climates.

What it looks like

A low mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide of large, deeply cut leaves. Spring leaves are amber yellow with deep rose centers that run out along the veins; summer leaves are bright chartreuse green with a silver overlay. Stems about 16 inches tall carry frothy spikes of small bubblegum pink star-shaped flowers for many weeks from spring. At peak the plant is a golden and rose patterned clump with a thick pink froth above.

Growing it with lavender

Eye Spy prefers shade, so plant it in a shaded bed away from the lavender, where its gold leaves and pink flowers brighten ferns and hostas.

Care

Best in part to full shade. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil kept evenly moist; hardy in zones 4-9. Remove spent flower stems and trim old leaves in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; never bury it.

Spacing

12–18" apart.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost to clay or sand. Avoid low, wet spots; crowns rot from overwatering.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; more sun in cool, northern gardens).

Darker-leaved types handle more sun once established. Hot afternoon sun scorches leaves.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Often semi-evergreen; old leaves may look ragged in spring. Fresh leaves appear from the crown in early to mid-spring.

Care details are written for the whole foamy bells group; a few are our best general guidance rather than cultivar-specific testing.
