About the Product

Fairytale Romance is among the first perennials to bloom each spring, sending up large clusters of apple blossom pink flowers as the glossy evergreen leaves emerge. The individual flowers are about an inch wide on six-inch clusters, making for an especially showy display.

The bold, leathery leaves form a clump 18 to 20 inches tall that stays attractive through the year. Use it as edging, a groundcover in partly shaded beds or in containers. Deer and rabbits tend to leave bergenia alone.

What it looks like

Dense clusters about 6 inches long of bell-shaped flowers about 1 inch wide in soft apple blossom pink, held on thick, reddish stems above the leaves. Leaves are large, rounded to paddle-shaped, thick, leathery and glossy green, forming a low rosette. The plant is 18 to 20 inches tall in bloom and 18 to 22 inches wide. At peak bloom pink flower clusters rise from the shiny green rosettes.

Growing it with lavender

Bergenia prefers a bit more moisture and some shade compared with lavender, so use it as a bold edging in a partly shaded border or along a path rather than in the dry lavender bed.

Care

Grow in part shade to full sun in average, well-drained soil with regular moisture; leaf color is richest with some shade in summer. Hardy in USDA zones 4-8. Remove winter-damaged leaves in early spring and divide crowded clumps after flowering every few years.

Hardy in zones 4a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

20-cell plugs are large enough to plant straight out; 72-cell plugs do better potted into 4-inch pots for a few weeks. Keep moist and shaded from hot sun until rooted in.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the thick creeping rhizome at or just below the soil surface, same depth as in the plug; leaves should sit above the soil.

Spacing

12–18 inches apart for groundcover.

Soil

Adaptable: clay, loam or sand; best with organic matter · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into sandy soil to hold moisture. It tolerates clay, but loosen it so water doesn't stand around the rhizomes.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates; full shade (fewer flowers)).

Winter sun deepens the red-bronze leaf color, but hot afternoon summer sun can scorch leaves.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Evergreen to semi-evergreen. Leaves often look battered or bronze after winter; new leaves and pink flower stalks appear in early to mid-spring.
