About the Product

Fancy Girl is a garden phlox with soft pink flowers, each marked by a dark pink eye inside a white halo; from a distance the plant reads as a blushing pink. It blooms from midsummer and reblooms well.

Like its close relatives, it resists powdery mildew and keeps its dark green leaves clean into fall, even in humid Michigan summers. At 24 to 30 inches, it suits the middle of the border. The fragrant flowers cut well and attract butterflies and bees.

What it looks like

Dome-shaped panicles are made of flat, five-petaled flowers about 1 inch across in soft pink, each marked with a deep pink center ringed in white. The panicles top sturdy, upright stems. Leaves are lance-shaped, dark green and arranged in pairs up the stems. The plant forms an upright clump about 24 to 30 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom the flower heads create a soft blush-pink cover over dark foliage.

Growing it with lavender

Phlox enjoys sun like lavender but wants richer soil and more regular water, so plant it in an adjacent cottage border, where its blush-pink flowers pick up as the first lavender bloom winds down.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in average to fertile soil kept evenly moist; full sun and good air flow give the most flowers and the healthiest leaves. Hardy in zones 3-8. Deadhead spent flower clusters to encourage rebloom, and divide every few years in spring to keep the clump vigorous.

How to grow Fancy Girl

Phlox · Phlox paniculata

Two very different plants: garden phlox (P. paniculata) is a tall summer bloomer that wants sun, rich moist soil and good air flow; creeping phlox (P. subulata) is a spring groundcover for sun and lean, well-drained soil.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Garden phlox arrives as a dormant crown with fibrous roots and old stem stubs. Soak 1 hour, plant with the crown at soil level and roots spread, and water well. Shoots appear in a few weeks.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Creeping phlox stays evergreen and flowers in early to mid-spring. Garden phlox emerges from the crown in mid-spring as reddish shoots and blooms in mid to late summer.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug or with the bare-root crown just at soil level.

Spacing

Garden phlox 18–24 inches for air flow; creeping phlox 12–18 inches for a mat.

Soil

Garden phlox: rich, moist loam. Creeping phlox: sandy or gravelly, well-drained soil. · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Add compost for garden phlox. For creeping phlox, add grit to heavy clay or plant on slopes and walls so it never stays wet.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

Garden phlox in shade gets more mildew and fewer flowers; creeping phlox blooms best in full sun.
