About the Product

Feather Falls is a graceful variegated sedge with long, narrow leaves striped dark green in the center and creamy white along the edges. They spill out in soft, flowing mounds that look like a small waterfall.

It handles more sun than many sedges while keeping its color, and grows 14 to 18 inches tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. Use it in containers, along borders or in mass plantings; it stays evergreen in mild winters and deer leave it alone.

What it looks like

Long, very narrow leaves about ¼ inch wide have a dark green center stripe and crisp creamy white margins. They arch up and cascade outward from the crown to form a broad, flowing mound 14 to 18 inches tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, with leaf tips reaching the ground. Tiny brownish flower spikes appear briefly in spring among the leaves. The overall effect is a fine-textured, waterfall-like mound of green and white.

Growing it with lavender

Feather Falls prefers part shade, so it is best in a lightly shaded border or container nearby rather than in the hot, full-sun lavender beds.

Care

Plant in part shade to part sun in average to moist, well-drained soil and water during dry spells; it is not very drought tolerant. Hardy in zones 5 to 9. Tidy up winter-worn leaves in early spring.

How to grow Feather Falls

Sedge · Carex oshimensis

Sedges are grassy clumps for part shade and moist soil. Japanese types (C. oshimensis, C. morrowii) are evergreen, the native woodland type (C. laxiculmis) handles dry shade, and Bowles' Golden (C. elata) loves wet soil.

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 72-cell plugs directly in spring or fall, or pot up into 4-inch pots to grow on. Keep moist and out of hot sun until new growth shows.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug, with the base of the leaves at soil level.

Spacing

12–18 inches apart for most; up to 24 inches for Bowles' Golden.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost to hold moisture. C. elata will grow in boggy soil or pond edges; others need moisture but not standing water.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Gold-leaved types like Bowles' Golden color best with some sun if kept wet; hot afternoon sun scorches Japanese sedges.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Japanese sedges stay evergreen and may look tattered after winter; new blades push up in spring. C. elata dies back and re-sprouts in mid-spring.
