Firefly Diamond is a clean, bright white yarrow that holds its flat flower heads high on sturdy stems above dark green, feathery leaves. The blooms keep looking fresh as they age instead of browning quickly, so the plant stays presentable from early summer well into late summer.
It grows into a strong, upright clump about two feet tall and a bit wider, making it a good choice for sunny borders, cottage and prairie-style plantings, and cutting gardens. Butterflies and bees visit the broad flower clusters all season, and deer and rabbits tend to leave it alone.
What it looks like
Flat-topped clusters 3 to 4 inches across made of hundreds of tiny ivory white florets with pale cream centers. The clusters sit on stiff, straight stems held evenly above the foliage, forming a level white canopy. Leaves are dark green, finely divided and fernlike, about 4 to 6 inches long, forming a dense base. The plant has an upright, columnar clump shape 24 to 28 inches tall and 32 to 40 inches wide. At peak bloom the whole top of the plant is covered in crisp white plates contrasting with the dark feathery leaves below.
Growing it with lavender
Firefly Diamond thrives in the same sunny, lean, well-drained ground as lavender, and its flat white plates make a crisp contrast against lavender's purple spikes while blooming alongside it in early to midsummer.
Care
Plant in full sun and lean to average, well-drained soil; water regularly the first season, then only during long dry spells. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Avoid rich soil, which makes stems tall and floppy. Shear the stems back by about half once the first flush fades to encourage a second round of flowers and keep the clump tidy.
