About the Product

Fronds Forever is a broad, full lady fern whose flat fronds are crested along the edges and finished with a small tassel at each tip. The leaflets are wide and set close together, giving the plant a lush, dense look.

It grows vigorously to about 2 feet tall, filling containers quickly and settling into the garden with ease. Use it to add texture to shady borders, as a loose groundcover under trees, or as a green filler in shade pots.

What it looks like

Bright green fronds about 2 feet long are broad and flat, with wide, closely spaced leaflets whose edges are ruffled into small crests. Each frond ends in a forked, tassel-like tip. Stems are light green to tan. The plant forms a dense, rounded to vase-shaped clump about 24 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. In summer the clump is lush and layered, with crested edges giving the fronds a frilly outline.

Growing it with lavender

This lady fern needs shade and moisture, so plant it in a shady bed near the house or under trees rather than with sun-loving lavender.

Care

Grow in part to full shade in moist, humus-rich soil; water during dry spells so fronds stay fresh. Hardy in zones 3 to 8. Cut back old fronds in early spring.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; don't bury the center where new fronds (fiddleheads) form.

Spacing

18–24" apart; larger lady ferns and giant painted types up to 30".

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.0–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost or leaf mold and mulch with shredded leaves. Lady ferns (A. filix-femina) want more moisture than Japanese painted ferns (A. niponicum).

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; painted ferns like some morning sun).

Japanese painted ferns color best with gentle morning light. Most lady ferns need shade; afternoon sun causes scorch and wilting.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Fronds unfurl in mid- to late spring, after many perennials; painted ferns can be especially late. Look for small fiddleheads at the crown before you worry.
