Frosted Elegance is a soft, dreamy-looking mangave with silvery blue arching leaves marked by soft green bands down the center. A waxy coating gives the leaves their frosted, powdery look.
It stays compact, about 6 to 8 inches tall, and is easy to grow in containers and sunny rock gardens. It is drought tolerant and deer and rabbits leave it alone.
What it looks like
Arching, lance-shaped leaves about 1 inch wide are a powdery silvery blue with a soft green band running down the center of each leaf. A waxy, frosted film covers the leaves, giving a matte, pale finish. The leaves form a compact, open rosette 6 to 8 inches tall and 12 to 14 inches wide, with small soft spines at the tips. The rosette looks like a pale, frosted blue star with faint green stripes.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 9 to 11.
