About the Product

Gasana is an everbearing strawberry that is as pretty as it is productive. It carries large, bright pink blossoms and sweet, juicy, cone-shaped berries at the same time from early summer into fall.

It sends out runners, so it fills in nicely in flower beds, raised vegetable beds and patio containers. It is a fun way to add color and fresh fruit to the same space.

What it looks like

Large, five-petaled, bright pink flowers about 1 to 1½ inches across with golden yellow centers sit just above the foliage. Leaves are medium green and divided into three rounded, toothed leaflets. Glossy, bright red, conical berries with tiny yellow seeds hang among the leaves at the same time as the flowers. The plant forms a low mound about 12 inches tall that spreads 2 to 3 feet wide by runners. At peak, the plant is dotted with pink blossoms and ripe red fruit together.

Growing it with lavender

Strawberries enjoy full sun like lavender but want richer, more evenly moist soil, so grow them in a nearby raised bed or kitchen garden rather than among the lavender.

Care

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil with the crown level with the soil surface, and water regularly, especially while fruit is forming. Hardy in zones 4 to 8. Mulch with straw to keep berries clean, and renew beds every few years with young runner plants.

Hardy in zones 4a–8b

Early spring once soil warms; potted plants after frost risk is past.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Early spring once soil warms; potted plants after frost risk is past.

How deep

Set the middle of the crown exactly at the soil line: roots fully buried, growing tip uncovered. Too deep rots; too shallow dries out.

Spacing

18–24" apart in rows 3–4 ft apart (matted row); day-neutral types about 12" apart.

Soil

Loamy, rich in organic matter · pH 5.5–6.5

Fix-it tip: Get a soil test first. Work in compost; plant in raised rows or beds in heavy soil. Avoid spots where tomatoes, potatoes or peppers grew recently (shared root diseases).

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light shade, with less fruit).

Full sun gives the most and sweetest berries.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

New leaves appear from the crown within a couple of weeks of spring planting. Established plants green up early in spring once winter straw is pulled back.
