About the Product

Glazed and Infused has large, silvery leaves traced with charcoal-black veins and softened by gentle ruffling. The foliage holds up well from sun to shade and forms a dense, mounding habit a bit taller than many silver types.

Deep rose-pink flowers rise on upright stems in early summer, and this variety blooms heavily without needing a cold period first. It stays 8 to 10 inches tall and about a foot wide, making it a good fit for edging, small beds and containers.

What it looks like

A dense, mounding plant 8 to 10 inches tall and 12 to 14 inches wide of large, rounded silver leaves with charcoal-black veins and softly ruffled edges. The silver has a metallic sheen that brightens shady spots. Upright stems 22 to 24 inches tall carry many narrow spikes of small deep rose-pink bell flowers in early summer. At peak the planting looks like a silver cushion crowned with a thick layer of rose pink wands.

Growing it with lavender

Its silver foliage mirrors the gray leaves of lavender, and it can sit at the shadier end of a lavender bed if watered a little more during dry spells.

Care

Takes full sun to full shade; in hot areas give it filtered sun or afternoon shade. Well-drained soil is essential for winter survival, even if the soil is lean. Hardy in zones 4-9; remove spent flower stems and tidy old leaves in spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
