Guava Lava is a bright hummingbird mint with coral orange tubular flowers set in mauve pink calyxes. It starts blooming in the heat of summer and keeps going for weeks, and the colorful calyxes stay attractive even after the flowers drop.
It grows about 20 inches tall and a bit wider, fitting the front or middle of a sunny border, a rock garden or a dry container planting. The foliage is fragrant, and hummingbirds, butterflies and bees visit steadily. It performs best in loose, well-drained soil.
What it looks like
Upright flower spikes 3 to 5 inches long crowded with slender tubular flowers in coral orange, each set in a mauve pink calyx, giving a two-tone coral-and-pink look. Spikes stand at the tips of many stems across the top of the plant. Leaves are medium green, small, oval and toothed. The plant is bushy and rounded, 20 to 22 inches tall and 22 to 26 inches wide. At peak bloom the top half of the plant is covered in coral orange and mauve pink spikes.
Growing it with lavender
Guava Lava thrives in the same hot, sunny, well-drained conditions as lavender, and its coral orange and mauve spikes make a warm, lively contrast beside purple lavender through the summer.
Care
Give it full sun and loose, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells once established and dislikes soggy winter soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9. Leave the stems standing over winter and cut back in spring once new growth appears, since this helps the crowns survive cold, wet weather.
