Hameln is a compact fountain grass with fine, mid-green leaves that glow when backlit by low morning or evening sun. It stays shorter and tidier than the species, about 2 to 3 feet tall.
Soft, greenish-cream plumes appear in midsummer, a few weeks earlier than the species, and age to tan. It is especially nice in mass plantings and also works as an accent in borders and containers.
What it looks like
Fine, narrow, mid-green leaves about ¼ inch wide arch outward from the center to form a rounded, fountain-shaped mound about 18 to 24 inches tall. In midsummer, fuzzy, cylindrical bottlebrush plumes 3 to 4 inches long rise on thin arching stems above the leaves, bringing the plant to 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. The plumes open soft greenish cream and age to light tan. In fall the foliage turns golden yellow to tan.
Growing it with lavender
Hameln likes full sun like lavender, and its soft cream plumes and fine arching leaves make a gentle, textured companion along the edge of a lavender bed.
Care
Plant in full sun in average to fertile, well-drained soil; it is fairly drought tolerant once established. Hardy in zones 5 to 9. Cut back to a few inches in early spring.
