About the Product

Heavenly United We Stand is a towering daylily with scapes over four feet tall topped by massive 9-inch blood red flowers with a vivid green throat. The color is sunfast, and the sheer size makes it a focal point in any border.

It blooms in midseason, and its scapes keep forming new buds at the tips, which stretches the flowering period. Plant it at the back of the border where its height can shine.

What it looks like

Enormous flowers about 9 inches across with broad, slightly ruffled tepals in deep sunfast blood red and a vivid green throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 54 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 32 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom huge red flowers stand high above the foliage at the back of the bed.

Growing it with lavender

Its great height and deep red flowers make a dramatic backdrop behind a lavender row in full sun and well-drained soil.

Care

Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Snap off faded flowers for a tidy look, cut bare scapes to the base after bloom and divide crowded clumps every few years.

Spring or late summer to early fall, at least 4–6 weeks before frost.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

You'll get one or more 'fans' of trimmed leaves on a crown with thick, tuberous roots. Soak roots for a few hours, then spread them over a mound of soil in the hole and cover so the crown sits no more than 1 inch deep.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Green shoots break through in early to mid spring. Evergreen types may look mushy after winter but regrow. Bloom varies by variety, from early summer to late summer.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring or late summer to early fall, at least 4–6 weeks before frost.

How deep

Set the crown, where the leaves meet the roots, no more than 1 inch below the soil surface. Planting deeper reduces bloom.

Spacing

18–24 inches.

Soil

Most soils, from sand to clay · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Work compost into heavy clay or very sandy soil before planting.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade).

Shade cuts down flowers. Dark reds and purples can like light afternoon shade.
