About the Product

Holy Grail pairs near-black, oval leaves with enormous deep red flowers 8 to 9 inches across. The red and black work together for a dramatic look, and after the petals drop, bright green calyces add one more layer of contrast.

It grows 4 to 4½ feet tall and 4½ to 5 feet wide and blooms from midsummer into early fall. It has won several trade and trial awards. Plant it in a spot with steady moisture and build a bed around it as the focal point.

What it looks like

A full, rounded bush 48 to 54 inches tall and 54 to 60 inches wide of oval, near-black leaves. Flowers are 8 to 9 inches across, saucer-shaped, rich deep red with smooth overlapping petals. Bright green calyces remain after the flowers fall. At peak the dark mound is lit with many huge crimson-red saucers.

Growing it with lavender

It likes full sun but needs far more moisture than lavender, so plant it in a regularly watered border or rain garden rather than in the lavender bed.

Care

Give it full sun to bring out the darkest leaf color. It grows in poor to fertile soil but needs consistent moisture; hardy in zones 4-9. It emerges late in spring, so mark its spot, and cut old stems to the ground in late fall or early spring.

How to grow Holy Grail

Hardy Hibiscus · Hibiscus

Hardy hibiscus (rose mallow) needs full sun, rich soil and plenty of water. It dies to the ground each winter and is one of the very last perennials to wake up in spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Late spring once soil has warmed, through early summer.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant plugs once nights are warm, or pot into 4–6 in pots in rich mix first. Keep them evenly moist and in full sun; they grow fast in heat. Expect a smaller plant the first year.

When to plant

Late spring once soil has warmed, through early summer.

How deep

Set the crown, where old stem stubs meet the roots, just below the soil surface with roots spread out.

Spacing

About 3–4 ft apart; mature plants are shrub-sized.

Soil

Loam or silt rich in organic matter · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Mix generous compost into sandy or poor soils to hold moisture. Slightly acidic soil is ideal. It tolerates wet, boggy soil better than drought.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part sun).

Full sun gives the most flowers and best disease resistance.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Very late: new shoots often don't appear until late May or June in Michigan, once soil is warm. Don't dig it up. Mark its spot in fall so you don't damage it while you wait.

Care details are written for the whole hardy hibiscus group; a few are our best general guidance rather than cultivar-specific testing.
