About the Product

Honorine Jobert is a classic white Japanese anemone that has been grown in gardens for well over a century. From late summer until frost, it produces pure white, single flowers with bright yellow centers on tall, wiry stems that sway above the dark green foliage.

It reaches three to four feet in bloom, lighting up the back of a border or a woodland edge when most other perennials are finished. It was named Perennial Plant of the Year in 2016 and holds an Award of Garden Merit. The flowers cut well, and deer and rabbits leave the plant alone.

What it looks like

Single, saucer-shaped flowers 2 to 3 inches across with five to six rounded, pure white petals around a green button center ringed with a dense cluster of bright yellow stamens. Flowers are held on tall, slender, wiry, branching stems high above the leaves. Leaves are dark green, deeply lobed and three-parted, forming a bold basal clump. The plant is 36 to 48 inches tall in bloom and 18 to 30 inches wide. At peak bloom white flowers float and sway high over the foliage.

Growing it with lavender

Japanese anemone wants richer, more evenly moist soil and some afternoon shade, so plant it away from lavender in a partly shaded border or woodland edge, where it will bloom long after lavender is done.

Care

Plant in full sun to part shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist but drains well; afternoon shade helps in hot summers. Hardy in USDA zones 4-8. Mulch the first winter, leave foliage standing until spring, and be patient, as plants can take a season to settle in.

Hardy in zones 4a–8b

Spring is best so roots establish before winter. Avoid fall planting in cold zones.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and tender. Pot into 4-inch pots and grow on 3–5 weeks in bright light, or plant out after frost. Keep evenly moist, harden off a week, and set the plug top level with the soil. Pot-up time helps this slow starter.

When to plant

Spring is best so roots establish before winter. Avoid fall planting in cold zones.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil surface, no deeper.

Spacing

18–24 inches; clumps spread by roots over time.

Soil

Loamy, humus-rich · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Work 2–3 inches of compost into sandy or clay soil. It needs moisture in summer but rots in winter-wet clay, so avoid low spots.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun with steady moisture in cool summers).

Afternoon shade prevents scorched leaves. Deep shade means fewer flowers.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

One of the later perennials to wake up, often mid to late spring. First-year plants may stay small and skip blooming; that's normal. Established clumps bloom late August into October.
