About the Product

Hopscotch brings warm tones to the shade garden. Its lobed, lacy leaves open red with dark red centers in early spring, lighten to bronze red, then mellow to deep green in summer heat.

In late spring, cream flowers shaped like small bottlebrushes appear above the foliage. The plant grows 10 to 12 inches tall and up to 2 feet wide. Its villosa parentage adds vigor and tolerance of heat and humidity, and the foliage is evergreen in most climates.

What it looks like

A low, spreading mound 10 to 12 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide of deeply lobed leaves with a lacy texture. Spring leaves are red with dark red centers, shifting to bronze red, then deep green in summer. In late spring, stems 20 to 24 inches tall carry dense, bottlebrush-shaped spikes of tiny cream flowers. At peak the plant is a lacy red-bronze mound with cream brushes standing above it.

Growing it with lavender

Foamy bells do best with shade and steady moisture, so plant Hopscotch in a shaded bed away from the lavender, alongside green hostas or ferns.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade; part shade gives the best color. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with even moisture; hardy in zones 4-9. Tidy old leaves in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; never bury it.

Spacing

12–18" apart.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost to clay or sand. Avoid low, wet spots; crowns rot from overwatering.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; more sun in cool, northern gardens).

Darker-leaved types handle more sun once established. Hot afternoon sun scorches leaves.

Dormant

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Often semi-evergreen; old leaves may look ragged in spring. Fresh leaves appear from the crown in early to mid-spring.

Care details are written for the whole foamy bells group; a few are our best general guidance rather than cultivar-specific testing.
