About the Product

Jethro Tull is a coreopsis with brilliant golden yellow flowers whose petals are neatly rolled into little tubes, giving each bloom a frilly, quilled look. It flowers heavily in early and midsummer.

The plant stays compact at about 18 inches tall and wide, making it a good fit for borders, containers and mass plantings. The flowers are long-lasting in a vase and draw butterflies and bees.

What it looks like

A compact, bushy clump about 18 inches tall and wide. Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped and medium green, 2 to 4 inches long, clustered near the base. Flowers about 2 inches across sit on thin upright stems, with bright golden yellow petals rolled into fluted tubes that flare open at the toothed tips, around a small gold center. At peak bloom the clump is crowded with frilly golden flowers held above the foliage.

Growing it with lavender

It thrives in lavender's sunny, well-drained conditions and blooms at the same time, so its golden flowers make a bright contrast with lavender in early summer.

Care

Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil; avoid rich, wet soil. Hardy in zones 4-9. Deadhead or shear after the first flush of flowers to encourage more blooms and keep the plant tidy.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring after frost or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 3-4 in pots or plant into the bed once rooted. Pinch tips once after planting for bushier plants.

When to plant

Spring after frost or early fall.

How deep

Crown at soil level, same depth as in the pot.

Spacing

12-18 in apart.

Soil

Average, sandy, or loam soil · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: In clay, mix in grit and compost and raise the bed; wet winter soil kills many coreopsis. Don't enrich heavily.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

Less sun means fewer flowers and floppy stems.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Species differ. Large-flowered types keep a green leafy base and grow early in spring; threadleaf and pink tickseed types emerge later, often not until mid to late spring.
