About the Product

June is one of the most loved medium hostas, known for leaves that change color through the season. In spring the pointed leaves have chartreuse centers wrapped in wide, streaky blue-green borders; by summer the centers warm to gold if the plant gets a bit of light, or stay chartreuse in deep shade.

The mound reaches about 15 inches tall and 20 inches wide. The leaves are thick and resist slug damage, and pale bluish-lavender flowers open on 20-inch scapes in mid to late summer. It is easy to grow and looks good massed along a shady walk or in a container.

What it looks like

Pointed, oval leaves with chartreuse to light gold centers and wide, irregularly streaked blue-green margins. Leaves are thick with a smooth, slightly powdery surface and fine parallel veins. The plant forms a neat, symmetrical mound about 15 inches tall and 20 inches wide, leaves overlapping in layers. In mid to late summer, slender scapes about 20 inches tall hold pale bluish-lavender bell-shaped flowers above the foliage. At peak the gold centers stand out against the cool blue edges.

Growing it with lavender

Hostas want shade and steady moisture, the opposite of lavender's hot, dry bed, so give this one a spot under trees or along the north side of the house with ferns and astilbe.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in rich, humus-heavy soil that stays evenly moist but drains well; water deeply during dry spells, especially the first summer. Hardy in zones 3-9. Cut spent scapes after bloom and divide crowded clumps in early spring as the shoots emerge.

How to grow June

Hosta · Hosta

Hostas want shade to part shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil. Blue and big-leaved types (like H. sieboldiana) need the most shade; many gold and fragrant types tolerate more sun.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 20-cell plugs straight into the garden or a 1-gallon pot; pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots to bulk up first. Keep in shade and evenly moist. Plugs take 3–5 years to show mature leaf size.

When to plant

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

How deep

Set the crown (where roots meet shoots) even with the soil surface. Plants from pots go at the same depth they grew.

Spacing

By mature size: minis 6–12 inches; medium 2 feet; giants 3–5 feet.

Soil

Rich, loamy, high in organic matter · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost, composted manure or leaves. In clay, raise the planting area slightly so crowns don't sit wet over winter.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Blue-leaved types keep their color best in shade. Gold types brighten with some morning sun; most scorch in hot afternoon sun.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Pointed shoots (eyes) push up in mid to late spring, later than many perennials, and unfurl over a couple of weeks. Small plants may stay dormant until May; a firm crown is alive.
