Lava Lamp grows into a large, billowy mass of broad, flat leaves in shifting warm tones. New leaves appear bright copper orange and gradually deepen to a coppery purple, with deep purple on the undersides, so the plant always shows a blend of glowing and dusky shades.
It is one of the bigger coral bells, reaching about 16 inches tall and more than 2 feet wide. In early summer, tall deep purple stems hold dense wands of cream flowers. Its villosa parentage gives it good heat and humidity tolerance, and it will grow beneath black walnut trees.
What it looks like
A broad, billowy mound about 16 inches tall and 28 inches wide made of very large, flat, rounded leaves with shallow lobes. Newest leaves are bright copper orange; older leaves age to coppery purple, and all have deep purple undersides. In early summer, deep purple stems 32 to 36 inches tall carry plump, closely packed wands of tiny cream flowers. At peak the plant is a wide copper-and-plum mass with tall cream spires rising above it.
Growing it with lavender
Its copper-purple leaves warm up the edge of a lavender planting in a spot with some afternoon shade and a bit more moisture.
Care
Grows in full sun to full shade; the copper tones are strongest in part sun. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with regular water; tolerates black walnut. Hardy in zones 4-9; cut back the flower stems after bloom and clean up worn leaves in spring.
