About the Product

Leadwort is a low groundcover that saves its best for late in the year. Brilliant gentian-blue flowers open from late summer until a hard frost, just when many other perennials have finished.

The green leaves turn bronzy red in fall, so the blue flowers shine against warm-colored foliage. It stays 8 to 12 inches tall and spreads slowly, making a good edging, a cover beneath shrubs or a filler for spots where spring bulbs have faded.

What it looks like

A low, spreading groundcover about 8 to 12 inches tall and 10 to 20 inches wide with thin, wiry reddish stems. Leaves are oval, 1 to 2 inches long, smooth and medium green in summer, turning bronzy red to burgundy in fall. Clusters of five-petaled, flat flowers about three-quarters of an inch across in intense gentian blue form at the stem tips, rising from reddish-brown bracts. At peak bloom in early fall the plant is a mat of red-bronze leaves studded with vivid blue flowers.

Growing it with lavender

It likes sun and good drainage like lavender, and its late blue flowers and red fall foliage make a low edging that keeps the lavender bed colorful after lavender has finished.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil; it tolerates poor soil but not standing water. Hardy in zones 5-9; add a winter mulch in zone 5 and plant before midsummer so it can settle in. It emerges late in spring, so mark its spot and cut old stems back in early spring.

Hardy in zones 5a–9b

Spring after frost, so it roots in before winter.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring after frost, so it roots in before winter.

How deep

Plant with the top of the root ball level with the soil.

Spacing

10–16" apart; it spreads to fill in.

Soil

Loam or sandy loam; tolerates poor soil · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Needs good drainage, especially in winter. Loosen clay and add some compost, or plant on a slope.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade).

Flowers best in sun; afternoon shade is fine in hot summers. Not for full shade.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Very late to emerge, often not until late spring. Mark where it's planted so you don't dig into it during spring cleanup.
