About the Product

Daybreak is a compact coreopsis with bicolor flowers: a bold orange-red center fading out to fringed golden tips. Because the flowers are sterile, they keep coming from early summer into early fall without any deadheading.

The plant forms a low mound just 8 to 12 inches tall of dark green, disease-resistant leaves. It is a long-season choice for the front of the border, rock gardens, prairie-style plantings and containers. A light shearing in midsummer keeps it looking fresh.

What it looks like

A compact, low basal mound about 8 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped and dark green, 1 to 2 inches long, forming a dense base. Daisy-like flowers about 1.5 inches across sit on thin wiry stems, each with a wide orange-red center band covering most of the petal and fringed, toothed golden yellow tips, around a small gold center. At peak bloom the mound is sprinkled with dozens of red-and-gold bicolor flowers.

Growing it with lavender

It shares lavender's need for full sun and well-drained soil, and its low red-and-gold flowers make a warm edging in front of lavender all summer long.

Care

Plant in full sun in lean to average, well-drained soil; it is drought tolerant once established. Hardy in zones 5-9. No deadheading is needed, but a light shearing in midsummer keeps the mound tidy and full of flowers.

Hardy in zones 5a–9b

Spring after frost or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 3-4 in pots or plant into the bed once rooted. Pinch tips once after planting for bushier plants.

When to plant

Spring after frost or early fall.

How deep

Crown at soil level, same depth as in the pot.

Spacing

12-18 in apart.

Soil

Average, sandy, or loam soil · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: In clay, mix in grit and compost and raise the bed; wet winter soil kills many coreopsis. Don't enrich heavily.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

Less sun means fewer flowers and floppy stems.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Species differ. Large-flowered types keep a green leafy base and grow early in spring; threadleaf and pink tickseed types emerge later, often not until mid to late spring.
