About the Product

Mahogany Monster lives up to its name with glossy mahogany red leaves that can reach 6 inches across. The clump fills out quickly into a hefty mound 12 to 16 inches tall and more than 2 feet wide, giving real presence in a border or a large container.

The color stays steady all season, with older leaves taking on a coppery cast. In midsummer, thick burgundy stems rise as tall as 3 feet, carrying masses of light pink buds that open to cream flowers, keeping the flower display in scale with the big foliage.

What it looks like

A large, low, mounding clump 12 to 16 inches tall and 22 to 28 inches wide of glossy, rounded mahogany red leaves up to 6 inches across with lightly ruffled edges. Older leaves shift toward coppery red. In midsummer, thick burgundy stems 32 to 38 inches tall hold dense clusters of light pink buds opening to tiny cream bells. At peak the plant is a broad, shiny red-brown mound with tall pink-cream plumes above it.

Growing it with lavender

Its large mahogany leaves give weight to the shaded end of a lavender bed, provided it gets more summer water than the lavender.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade; afternoon shade keeps the leaves glossy in hot sites. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with regular watering; hardy in zones 4-9. Cut back flower stems after bloom and tidy old foliage in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
