About the Product

Midnight is a very compact Carpathian bellflower with remarkably dark violet-blue, cup-shaped flowers. It forms a tidy little mound only 6 to 8 inches tall, perfect for the very front of a border, a rock garden or a small container.

Blooms open in late spring and, with a little deadheading, continue on and off through summer. Tuck it along paths and between stones where its deep color can be seen up close.

What it looks like

A tight, low, rounded mound about 6 to 8 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide. Leaves are small, heart-shaped to oval, about an inch long with lightly toothed edges, bright to medium green and glossy. Upward-facing, open cup-shaped flowers about 1.5 inches across in very dark violet-blue, with slightly darker veins and a pale center, sit on short stems just above the leaves. At peak bloom the mound is almost hidden under a dense cover of deep violet cups.

Growing it with lavender

It likes sun and good drainage, so it can edge the front of a lavender bed, where its deep violet cups sit below the lavender spikes, as long as it gets a little more water in dry weeks.

Care

Give it full sun to part shade and moist, well-drained soil; a little afternoon shade helps in hot spells. Hardy in zones 3-8. Snip off spent flowers to keep new buds coming, and divide in spring every few years if the center thins.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring after hard frost or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant or pot up plugs soon after arrival. Keep them evenly moist and lightly shaded for a few days, then move to sun. Carpathian plugs grow into small mounds the first year and often bloom the same season.

When to plant

Spring after hard frost or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil surface.

Spacing

Carpathian: about 12–14 in. Clustered: about 12–18 in, and expect it to fill in.

Soil

Loam or sandy loam with some organic matter · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost to hold moisture in sandy soil; in heavy clay, add compost and plant slightly high. Clustered bellflower tolerates neutral to alkaline soil.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade, especially afternoon shade in hot regions).

In Michigan, full sun to light shade works. In the South, give afternoon shade.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Leafy rosettes appear early in spring. Clustered bellflower sends up new shoots from spreading roots, sometimes a short distance from where you planted it.
