About the Product

Mini Gallery™ Red puts solid red lupine spikes on a short, sturdy plant. It is one of the earlier lupines to bloom and flowers heavily for its size.

Standing about 14 to 16 inches tall, it is easy to fit into the front of a border or a small bed, and a group makes a bold block of color in early summer. The spikes are good for cutting and draw bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

What it looks like

Short, dense conical spikes are packed with pea-like florets in a solid, warm red, slightly deeper in the unopened buds at the tip. Each spike is thick at the base and tapers evenly to a point. Leaves are palmate, with narrow green leaflets radiating like wheel spokes on short stalks. The plant forms a compact upright clump about 14 to 16 inches tall and 7 to 9 inches wide. At peak bloom several red spikes rise together just above the foliage.

Growing it with lavender

Lupines share lavender's love of sun and sharp drainage, and their early-summer spikes bloom just ahead of the first lavender flowers, handing the color off to the purple wands as they fade.

Care

Plant in full sun to light afternoon shade in average, well-drained soil that leans slightly acidic; lupines dislike heavy clay and standing water. Hardy in zones 4-8, they prefer cool nights and can fade in hot, humid summers. Cut spent spikes before they set seed to tidy the plant, and set plants where they can stay, since the long taproot resents being moved.

How to grow Mini Gallery Red

Lupine · Lupinus polyphyllus

Garden lupines want full sun, cool summers and well-drained, neutral to slightly acid soil that isn't too rich. They thrive in Michigan-style summers but are often short-lived, especially where summers are hot.

Hardy in zones 4a–8b

Spring or early fall; plant young so the taproot isn't disturbed later.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Lupines dislike root disturbance. Move 72-cell plugs into deep 4-inch pots without teasing the roots, or plant directly once hardened off. Plant out while still young, before the taproot circles.

When to plant

Spring or early fall; plant young so the taproot isn't disturbed later.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug, crown at soil level; don't break up the root ball.

Spacing

12–18 inches for compact series, up to 2 feet for tall types.

Soil

Light, sandy or gravelly loam, low in nutrients · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Avoid lime and heavy fertilizer; they prefer neutral to slightly acid soil. Loosen clay deeply and add grit so the taproot isn't sitting wet.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light afternoon shade in warm areas).

In shade they flower poorly and stretch.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Palm-like leaves appear early in spring from the crown. First-year plants from plugs may bloom lightly; full bloom usually comes the second spring.
